Something's Changed.

Its the closest to empty nest that we'll ever get.

Susan staying with friends in town.

Jacob on his mission in Idaho.

Gabe traveling this week in New York.

That leaves Thelma and Louise aka Hannah and Michelle.

It is quiet.

Thank goodness for ipads and ipods.

Glee!

Michelle loves Glee - the t.v. show.
Since we don't have tv we just download the episodes to her ipod.

If you don't know the show -
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

Michelle loves singing all the songs from Glee -
but her favorites are
Poker Face,
Bad Romance
and
My Life Would Suck Without You.

I told her she has to stop singing
Like a Virgin
and
Papa Don't Preach.
Somehow the "like a virgin - touched for the very first time"
and
"Daddy please don't we're going to get married"
lines don't sound good coming from her mouth.

She says her sister Susan is Sue Sylvester
(cause of the hair not the name)

This is Sue Sylvester

She says Gene is Mr. Schuester
(again cause of the hair)

This is Mr. Schuester

She likes Mercedes - but spells her name Peresaides
(pretty good when you consider Michelle has a severe hearing loss)

This is Peresaides/Mercedes

She calls herself Rachel Berry - who she sometimes says is
the greatest singer in the world
and other times says is
the most beautiful singer in the world.

This is Rachel Berry

She says I am Rachel Berry's mom.

This is Rachel's mom (my twin)

Sometimes she calls herself Quin Fabray
(no doubt because Quin had a baby)

This is Quin.

She says her boyfriend is Finn Hudson.

This is Finn.

But she (Michelle) got in a HUGE fight with Hannah yesterday because Hannah said she (Hannah) was Santana and her (Hannah's) boyfriend is Puck.

This is Puck and Santana.

Michelle has no tolerance for people invading her fantasy world.

Of course if you don't watch the show then
you have NO idea what I am talking about...
GET WITH THE PROGRAM! (pun intended)

Kindness of Strangers

Got this email this morning from a wonderful stranger -

Hi Sister Wright!

My name is Starla Jeppson and I live in Boise, Idaho. My husband is the ward mission leader and we made breakfast for our missionaries this morning and they are having their meeting right now with him, going over the members of our ward. Your son was just transferred into our area at the last transfers, but I thought you would like to hear that he is warm, fed, and doing the Lord's work over here! :D He seems like a very nice elder...we look forward to working with him more here in our ward.
We also have a son out serving a mission, he is in Nicaragua, and I know I would LOVE to get a picture of him, so I am including the two pictures I took this morning. I took the first one, then told them both to smile! :D His message to you is: "You are awesome...to you from me. TTYL!"

Have a wonderful Christmas phone call!

A fellow missionary mom,
Starla

And here's the photo
I am totally going to do this when missionaries come over to our house!
Means so much to their families (moms especially)

Rain and More Rain

It has been raining for 3 days straight - heavy, heavy rain. I am grateful for a roof that doesn't leak, walls and windows that protect us from the wet and wind. I am grateful that the electricity hasn't gone out - although it went out 3 times at Ala Moana Shopping Center I hear.

Its nice snuggle weather.

30 days

Today marks 30 days since I got my back/leg injury. It has been a challenging and rewarding 30 days.

I was forced to slow down and rest - that has been a great blessing. I feel quite relaxed despite the pain - and I have yet to get bored.

My family has been so supportive and helpful to me.

I learned that the bed we have is too soft - so the last week I moved to the couch. I think Santa will bring a very firm futon bed for Christmas.

I am doing so much better and am pleased with my recovery. My aim now is to continue gaining strength and hopefully have feeling return to my left leg from my hip down.

I am planning a trip to Utah next week for a wedding - I'll be driving up from Las Vegas with my cousin - will probably have to stop a bunch of times and stretch but I think I can do it.

Wish me well.

Next Up!

Exciting news - Gabe got the lead role in Castle Performing Arts Center's spring production of the musical Brigadoon! The part is the role of Tommy Albright (played on the silver screen by Gene Kelly).

Gabe is thrilled since he said its always been a dream of his to get a Gene Kelly role. To him Gene Kelly is the total package - actor, singer, dancer.

He's been taking voice lessons to extend his singing range - and it seems to have paid off. He's gotta take tap dancing now but he feels pretty confident that that will go well - he is a good dancer.

Show runs every weekend from March 25-April 10.

So guess who'll be 3rd row center seat for all 9 performances? Anyone care to join me?

Where's George?

I got one of those dollar bills that has "wheresgeorge.com" stamped on it. And if you go to that website you can track where the bill has been.

I was very excited to get it - I had gotten one before and accidentally spent it before I could go online to track its history.

So I checked online and found that this particular dollar bill originally entered into the where's george program on March 23, 2010 and in those 239 days it has traveled....wait for it...a total of 7.3 miles!!! All the way from Honolulu.

Talk about disappointing!

Funniest Thing Ever!

Susan was going to the store so I asked her to buy me a can of Orange Crush.

As she walked out of the door with Hannah she said, "Hannah, help me remember to buy mom a can of orange crush."

I don't know which is funnier - Susan asking Hannah to remember OR Susan actually thinking Hannah can remember.

You gotta know both girls to appreciate the humor.

Tis the Season

The tree is up - thanks to Gabe and Michelle. And I was such a good mom I only rearranged like 6 ornaments.

Of course pine needles are everywhere...

There was a storm that passed through here last night - thunder and lightning all night long...

Got an adorable Christmas card from our nephew Cody and his cute family in Utah and an equally cute one from cousin Lisa and her family...

And with only 15 days left until Christmas I'm just starting to think about shopping. Hoping to do most of it online this year. My leg/back isn't really up to mall shopping yet...

Can't Believe It!

Am doing sooooooo much better today - could it be the pain meds?

I am doing just what the physical therapist told me to do - certain stretches every half hour. I can sit for 20 minutes with a towel rolled at the small of my back!

Still numb but all in all doing so much better!

And...yesterday I got a text on my phone from a lady in Idaho who had just had lunch with Jacob and his companion - and she sent me this picture!
His hair is longer than I've ever seen it!

On the Mend

Had my first physical therapy session today and it went well! Got lots of recommendations etc. I'll have this beat in no time!

My immediate goal is to be able to drive 5 miles without pain. I can do this.

Something I Heard in the Night

The other night I kept hearing Elvis (the dog) barking. After several hours I went out to look. I opened the door, turned on the light and a little dog ran in the house! I am not an animal lover but this dog was a cutie and obviously belonged to someone.

Luckily he had a tag - I called the number on the tag and it actually was a neighbor 2 houses down. She was in the hospital but said her sister in law was supposed to be watching the dog. Even though this lady had been our neighbor for maybe 4 years we had never seen this little dog - she kept him inside.

It was 4 in the morning - and our dog lover Michelle was asleep - what to do??? We were so tempted to wake her up - and finally gave in to that temptation. She thought she was dreaming!

Someone came to pick up the dog later that morning and Michelle cried when She came home from school and realized Lucien Lau was gone.

Stuff

So I am on a steroid, pain killers and about to start 8 weeks of PT for pinched L4 nerve and blown disc. Also found out I have severe arthritis in my back. I think the steroids are starting to work and I really haven't had to take the pain meds much. Things are looking up!

Gene was dear - yesterday there was a breakfast meeting that I HAD to attend for work and he took the day off to drive me, with for me and bring me home. (Can't drive on the meds). He's a keeper alright!

I was supposed to leave for Washington D.C. on Sunday for FASD meetings but had to cancel because of my back problems...

No Christmas tree yet but hopefully tonight - it will be fun decorating it. I like the LIGHTS!

Am looking forward to 22 days from now when we get to talk to Jacob on the phone - yay! Then 2 days after that I fly to Las Vegas to meet Stephanie and we drive to Utah for Vanessa's wedding reception. Hopefully the back will be good by then.

I can only sit for about 5 minutes at a time so blogging (and any other type of sit down activity) will come in spurts.

Now's my nap spurt though...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Challenging

That's what this last week has been. My back pain went to leg and hip pain that has kept me down for most of the week. I was able to pull off the Ward Thanksgiving dinner - that got moved from the church to the district park at the last minute - then went right back down after that.

Sooo thankful for a supportive and capable husband. He really came through and took care of things around here and also took care of me.

It is a beautiful sunny day here in Kaneohe - the sky is clear blue and the breeze feels good. So much to be grateful for.

Gene took Michelle to horseback riding. Before she left she told Hannah, "After horseback riding lets go to Waikiki Beach Hannah!" Haha - that won't happen...but if they are good Gene will stop at 7-11 and let them get an icy. He took them to the beach yesterday - but not Waikiki - not sure where she got the idea about Waikiki Beach.

Gonna take it easy next week - need to be tip top by next Sunday when I leave for Washington D.C. then New Jersey (to see Les Mis!!!) then to Connecticut to see my friend Suzie. So looking forward to reconnecting with that girl!

I really should be Christmas tree shopping - but not up to it.

Hannah's seizures are as bad as ever - actually I think worse. And we've upped her meds again. Visit with the neurologist on Dec. 7.

But all in all - life is good.

Home again

So I was in Washington D.C. last week. had an all day meeting then on Saturday did a private D.C. Tour - I've been to D.C. many times, have seen the monuments etc. but this was the first time I had been on a tour like this. I used Vera - Gene and I had used her last May for a Lost Symbol Tour. She is a very smart young woman!

Anyway I think I enjoyed the Library of Congress the most - it is so beautiful inside - reminded me alot of Europe with all the murals, frescoes, etc.

It was a hard trip. Jst before I left I strained my back. Got a blessing from Gene and in his prayer he asked that I might be able to travel in comfort. THAT WORKED! While I was on planes, I was pretty good. However, when I had to walk or transition from sitting to walking it was tough.

Because the back hurt I started walking weird - which led to pain in my lower back and legs. I went and got a massage on Friday afternoon at a nearby spa and that helped alot. But after Saturday's tour I was walking like someone who needed a hip replacement. I had another massage (in-room) on Saturday night - too hurting to go to the spa. That massage was worth nothing. The gir was lousy - too into the "energy" and her won deep breathing.

Anyway I made it home and today I will get real comfort from dear Rochelle my massage therapist friend who will definitely hurt me to help me.

Oh and the Mossman Ohana Trip to Scotland next October - already 24 people have expressed an interest!!!! So the research begins as to lodging etc. Praying that airfares come down.

My friend's mother died. I am speaking at her funeral tomorrow. I am not yet prepared but will be tomorrow.

Ohana Reunion Planning Committee meeting tomorrow night - it will be good to get together with the expanded group.

Am in charge of the ward Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday...imu turkey...mmm,mmm good!

Family Reunion Day 1

Last week was our Mossman Ohana Reunion - and it was GREAT!

It began on Wednesday with the Gathering of the Clan - a get to know you event with a stew and rice dinner. Over 200 people attended. The evening started with the sounds of a bag pipe - as a lone piper wearing traditional kilt greeted us with Scotland the Brave. he then played a haunting rendition of Hawaii Pono'i. Definitely chicken skin!

Got to see 2 of my favorite relatives

And met so many others!

Here's a look at our t-shirts designed by Allie!
Don't ya just love them?

Stay tune for Day 2...

Elections & Surfing

All my guys LOST!!! Am I a jinx????

Well at least some strides were made on the national scene.

Its a day of mourning.

And then Andy Irons dies.
With a daughter that moves in the surfing crowd, I cannot help but be moved by Andy's passing - at 32 years old.

Comfort comes in knowing that we go on forever and this life is but a short time in the grand eternity.

Whirlwind

Last Thursday Hannah has 46 seizure at school (by 12:30 p.m.). After phone consult with her doctor we were advised to take her to emergency. She was admitted so they could give her megadose of medication. Stayed overnight - the megadose makes her feel so disoriented and off that she cries pitifully for hours...poor thing.

We got to come home Friday to prepare for the Halloween weekend.

Because we observe a rather strict Sabbath we did Trunk-or-Treat at our church on Saturday night. It was a blast!!!! Hannah was a princess (with high heels of course) and Michelle was...get ready for it...a baby doctor! She felt this gave her license to carry babies - but it didn't - fortunately there were two puppies there that night to distract her from the many babies that were also there.

Today is a school holiday and so is tomorrow. Hope I survive with these two little dears...

Family Reunion next week - whew! Will I make it to next week?

Updates

Got back from Puerto Rico - it was GREAT! I would like to go back there for a vacaion with my fam! I had great company in Puerto Rico - lots of fun.

Came back and went to 2 nights of Hawaii International Film Festival. Yipee!! Saw 2 Chinese movies - Under a Hawthorn Tree and The Star and The Sea, 1 Swedish movie - The Girl who kicked the Hornet's Nest, 1 Japanese Movie -Shodo Girls, and 1 Hawaiian movie - Under a Jarvis Moon. I highly recommend The Star and The Sea - a sweet story of Chinese pianist Xian Xiang - and Under Jarvis Moon - the story of young Hawaiians sent to colonize Pacific islands just before World War II.

Fully involved now in arrangements for our Mossman Ohana Reunion which is just 2 1/2 weeks away!!! More registrations coming in every day. I am so excited about meeting new relatives!

Looking forward to going to the Temple Open House today.

On the homefront - all is well. Gabe is in rehearsals for Dance Concert which is Nov. 12-13-14. He also found himself a job teaching hip-hop dancing at a studio down the street. He's salivating to get his license.

Susan is busy with work and her boyfriend George. Hardly see her it seems.

Hannah is Hannah. Seizures continue - the meds do not slow them down - and do not slow her down either.

Gene is doing great as usual. He is always busy being of service to others.

We hear from Jacob each week - he is always so positive and enjoying his mission - even if the weather is turning colder. He'll be home in July!!!!

Trying to post this before the girls get up and the real action starts. Once they're up - its over.

Buenos Dias Girls

Well I am here in Puerto Rico girls. It took about 20 hours to get here - 3 airplanes. My hotel is very nice. It is on a coast but to get to the beach the hotel has a boat that we get on that takes us to our own island called Palomino where there is a beautiful beach and horseback riding and a restaurant. I have not had time to go the island because I have been busy in meetings.

In Puerto Rico they have a little frog called the coqui frog that lives in the tress and shrubs. There are millions of them here. They are tiny and you cannot see them because they hide. BUT you can hear them all night - they sound like really loud birds chirping all the time. Luckily, if we close our door and turn on our air conditioner we don't hear them.

I miss you both. I hope you are being obedient and trying very hard to be helpful. I know you are being kind. Kindness is very important.

I love you.

When it Rains

It pours!

Gene's supposed to leave next Tuesday for India. Well he is sick - down flat. He actually has been battling a cold or something for about 2 weeks. He thinks its progressing but yesterday he could hardly get up and he'll probably stay home from work today too.

He went to the Dr. on Wednesday for his precautionary malaria pills for his trip - Dr. sent him to get a flu shot and also told him the malaria pills are actually good for bronchitis.

So we are thinking maybe his cold will get better soon

And maybe that flu shot gave him a small dose of the flu...

Anyway - also the dryer is broken

And the ice dispenser on the fridge door is broken.

And did I mention the air con in SHRED (our Toyota Echo) is broken?

And the "change oil" light is coming on in the van?

And the safety inspection on EDGE (our Toyota Camry) has expired?

And Mike the Mechanic cannot come to repair the cars until next week?

But there are still things that make me smile

Like Michelle wearing one of THREE pairs of 2 1/2 inch heels Leo gave to
Hannah for her birthday.

Only the most fashionable wear them with socks.

Reversal

Last January Gene was diagnosed with high blood pressure - both his parents had it.

We changed our diet. Very little red meat and very little dairy. (just In-n-Out and Five Guys when we are on the mainland.

Two weeks ago he went to the doctor.

Blood pressure normal!

Lost almost 18 pounds!

He's the man!

Aloha from Missouri Girls!

Hi Michelle & Hannah!

We are in Jameson, Missouri now. We are staying on a beautiful farm for 2 days and nights. There are some cows on this farm and one of the cows is named Eva and Eva has a new baby calf named Stew! When the farmer calls Eva's name, Eva comes running because Eva knows she will get food.

The farmer also has a dog named Rusty who is big with long orange colored fur. Even though Rusty is big he is very friendly.

Missouri is a very beautiful place. They grow many thing around this area - soy beans, hay, corn. There are not alot of houses - just farms every few miles. You would enjoy this place because you love animals!

Last night we had a fun activity here at the farm. Uncle Manu and Aunty kookie taught everyone how to do a Samoan dance.

We will be home in 3 days - on Sunday night.

I know you are both being kind and obedient. I love you both - you are such wonderful girls - but the thing I like best about you is that you are both so kind.

Love,
Mom

Its Tuesday Girls!

We are in Rochester New York. It is very rainy here and we did not bring an umbrella!

Today we will go to Joseph Smith's old home and to the Hill Cumorah. We are having a nice time but miss you very much.

Last night we ate dinner at a place called Five Guys. Some people think Five Guys has the best hamburgers in the country. We do not agree. We like In-n-Out Burger so much more. Even the french fries at Five Guys were not as good as In-n-Out Burger.

We will be home on Sunday night. I hope you are having a nice time with Susan. I know you are being obedient at home and at school. I know you are being kind - you are both such kind loving girls.

Love,
Mom

Greetings Girls -

Hi Hannah & Michelle,

After 3 long airplane rides we arrived in Ohio yesterday. We visited Historic Kirtland Village where Joseph Smith once lived.

We are staying in a hotel called the Residence Inn. It has two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. Uncle Manu and Aunty Kookie are staying in one bedroom and Dad and I are in the other. The hotel has a free breakfast which I will go downstairs to eat in a few minutes.

Today we will visit the Kirtland Temple which was built by the early members of the church. Then we will drive to New York.

It is not too cold here but it definitely is fall here. The leaves are changing colors - red, yellow, orange. So pretty!

Did you have a nice Sunday with Susan? I hope you are being obedient and helpful. Remember to make your beds each morning. And remember to be kind.

We love you,
Mom and Dad

I'm Sooooo In Love

And his name is MAC.

Yup - I'm lovin my MAC.

Should have made the switch long ago.

If you're thinking about it - JUST DO IT!

Updates

Had a busy week at the tradeshow and a good weekend.

Went to Kastle's mission farewell party. Kastle has been a good friend of Jacob's since Jacob was 4 years old. Kastle's mom Kookie is one of my best friends. Kastle has been called to serve in the Japan Nagoya mission.

Jacob's friend Colin also got his mission call - to Raleigh North Carolina!

And if that isn't enough great mission news...there's one more -

Telenoti Mafi (Sii to most of us) - my cousin Mellene's son has been called to the Guam Micronesia mission.

Feeling so blessed to know such fine young men.

Also this weekend I went to Gabe's play twice! It is really good - just so above and beyond anything he has ever done. And I have the best family - Uncle Kini, Aunty Judee, Candie and her girls, and Aunty Leo and two of her friends came out to see the show! So supportive! It meant so much to me and to Gabe.

This is Gabe's first play with a mostly adult cast - and it shows - the caliber of talent, maturity of singing voice and dance versatility is obvious. And for Gabe it has meant he comes home exhausted!!!

Only 2 more weeks of performances - although they might extend.

This week we're bust getting things settled before we leave on our trip to church history sites on Saturday. Really looking forward to that tour and spending time with good friends.

So grateful for all I have - especially the gospel of Jesus Christ and the blessings the knowledge of the gospel brings - that families can be together forever, that I have a Heavenly Father who loves me and that I am never alone.

Where Did It Go?

The week I mean...

Monday - blur
Tuesday - blur
Wednesday - blur
Thursday - blur
Now it's TGIF!

But really, yesterday Michelle and Hannah gave great presentations in the Governor's Ceremonial Room at the FASD Awareness Day Proclamation Signing! And my sweet cousin Candie came with her 2 girls! So supportive! And Jill and Chad came too! Gotta love 'em.

I'll post pictures when I get them.

This weekend Gene got a cabin at Bellows - so maybe a little R&R.

Yesterday Michelle asked me for a computer and Gabe asked me for a plane ticket to the mainland for his Fall Break.

Ahh...as my old boss used to say "Life's tough and then you die".

Saturday, September 4, 2010

Saturday

What a great day it has been. We did...nothing different...

Horseback riding for Michelle from 9 - 10. She loves to trot!

Came home then went to Sam's Club.

Came home again and cleaned the fridge.

Made dinner (salmon of course) and that was that!

Oh but the one thing that made it GREAT was...

A hand written letter from Jacob!

HAPPY!

Incognito

Someone gave Michelle a wig for her birthday in May.
I had it hidden.

She found it.

I'm Converting

Yup - its true!

Its finally gonna happen I think.

After searching, studying and pondering I've decided.

I know you're probably shocked.

The change is coming.

I know it'll take a while for me to feel totally comfortable.

But I've made up my mind.

I'm doing it -

MAC - here I come.

Faith

I read a sad news story. A Bishop of some ward in Visalia, California was sitting in his office at church yesterday and some guy came in and shot him to death. Police were unable to determine motive or relationship. The gunman committed suicide after the shooting.

The Bishop left behind a wife and 6 sons, the youngest less than 6 months old.

As the wife of a former Bishop, I can attest to the fact that Bishops work so hard and so long. After their regular full time job they then spend about equal amount of time during their church work as the Bishop. Their pay is opportunities, challenges, relationships and blessings.

Through their service Bishops develop a great amount of love for those in their congregation. They are always there to help - anytime, any place, anywhere, anyone.

They usually serve without fanfare - but always clothed in humility.

Bishops have the opportunity to develop a close relationship with the Savior as they try to emulate His life and work.

This Bishop who died was killed while doing the Lord's work.

His family will be devastated but will survive because of their faith that Families Can Be Together Forever.

A Question

How did I get so luck?

Birthday Picnic

Last week Saturday we went to a birthday picnic for Carly and Lehua at Blaisdell Park (which is not across from Blaisdell center but is in Pearl City -- luckily I corrected Susan or she would have showed up at Thomas Square - which is the park across from Blaisdell Center).

It was great party! Jill and Chad worked so hard and it was perfect - great food (chili, hot dogs, steak, lumpia, noodles, salads, beans, and more), great weather, fun games, lots of prizes and a jump house!

It was wonderful seeing our 2 special little girls.

Lehua is now 2 years old.
Those eyes are magic!

Carly is now 4 years old.
Still has that great smile.

We love these girls!

Countdown to a Case of Nerves

I am an accomplished public speaker. I have made presentations on a variety of topics to audiences both large and small. So what's causing me a bit of self-doubt?

The Healing Our Spirit Worldwide Conference to be held here on Oahu Sept 6-10. The conference brings indigenous people from around the world together to discuss issues around alcohol and other substances, healing, culture and leadership. More than 2,000 people have registered.

On Wedensday (as in 2 days ago) I was asked to present a workshop with 2 other women. I know the other 2 women - we all serve on the Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian Expert Panel on Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders for the SAMHSA Center of Excellence. One of the women in from Alaska and the other from U.S.

The presentation is only 1 hour long but I'm still nervous (and I usually don't get nervous...). So why this time?

1) Its such short notice!
2) We will officially be representing SAMHSA (the federal gov't!)
3) Over 2,000 attendees (I know they won't all be coming to our presentation...)
4) Lots to say in a brief period of time!
5) Its at the convention center and I don't like the parking there!
6) Most of the attendees etc. are in the medical field or human services field and I am not.

But I'm glad to do it since it will bring attention to FAS. Anything that will improve life outcomes for my two little girls and other like them.

Relying on the Lord for inspiration and confidence...

Suck it up and face your fears!

Phone Call

So my good friend who runs a therapeutic massage clinic and school called and asked if I wanted to come in tomorrow morning for an 1 1/2 hour massage...for FREE!

How sweet is that?

I Am Good At...

So to boost my self esteem a bit (everybody can use that at one time or another) I decided to share one thing I am really good at.

Hmmm...what could it be?

I know...

I am a good pie maker! I really am. I detest store/bakery bought pies. I would never think of serving such inferior products in my home or at any dinner for which I am responsible.

And I DETEST as in HATE premade crust!!!!

I love homemade pies. Fruit, pudding - any kind!

I love the process of measuring the flour and salt and butter and water.

I love mixing the dough to just the right consistency.

I enjoy rolling out the dough with a wooden rolling pin.

I revel at stretching the dough to the perfect size to fit in the 9 inch glass (it must be glass!) pie plate.

I love filling that smooth surface with something yummy.

I love the smell of my kitchen as the pie cooks.

But most of all...

I love seeing how much the love of my life enjoys eating my pies!

Tonight its pumpkin topped with vanilla ice cream!

Quick Update

Been awhile and I still am busy to the max so this will be quick...but - things are gong well at our hale!

Gabe is soooooooooooo busy with rehearsals. His show, Once On This Island (from the Broadway caribbean Little Mermaid production), opens on Oct. 10 at Paliku Theater. This one is giving him LOTS of exposure and learning opportunities in the world of theater - not high school level as he has had in the past. Its working with almost all adults in a very professional atmosphere.

Honestly - he is involved in so many things I'm not sure which is which. I know Saturday he was doing some kind of Kung fu panda voice over work with James Hong. I know he is supposed to be auditioning for a touring show with Kaiser Permanente and then there's Dance Concert rehearsals. And with all that going on we got a GREAT progress report from school - A's and B's! Hope he keeps up the good work.

Michelle is enjoying 7th grade and horseback riding. She got her hair cut short on Friday. I'll post pictures later. She is so funny - the other day she said:

"Mom today is PE in the weight room! I love the weight room!"

I said, "What do they have in the weight room?"

She said, "A bicycle and another thing that you hold."

I said "What do you do in the weight room?"

She said "I ride the bike and I burn 6 calories!"

I said, "Wow! 6 calories!"

She said, "Yup! Can I have a Pop-Tart?"

Hannah is now in 5th grade. We are still struggling with her seizures. She averages about 16 per day : (

Despite those seizures she's still a bundle of energy. As in "Hannah stop climbing on the door, Hannah stop running around the house, Hannah get down off that shelf, Hannah quit kicking that..."

Every morning she say "Hey mom, want me to play you a beautiful song?" Then she proceeds to play the same 5 notes of her original piano composition for me. Everyday the same notes...at least she's not banging on the piano.

Its great to have Susan home. She is such a helpful girl! Yesterday we went to a birthday party for Carly and Lehua and she spent most of the time holding baby CJ. She is back working with Kaily at Castle High School but with a schedule change - she works Tues, Wed, Thurs. only. Now she can pick up sub jobs on Monday and Friday.

Gene ran a half marathon on Saturday and did well! He can't wait until his birthday next year when he turns 60 because that will put him in an older category - he jokingly says at that age "everyone's a winner - just like in Special Olympics".

Oh yeah, he got called again to be an extra - this time on Hawaii Five-O. But after his last experience (which was too much sitting around and waiting for him) - he had to turn down the role. Such a diva!

Jacob is fine and so appreciates those of you who write him. He only has ONE YEAR LEFT! And only 4 months until he can call home (on Christmas!)

He is so sweet - he sent Hannah a ball through the mail. Just wrote her name and address on it and had it stamped and mailed. The mail carrier said "This is a first for me!" She's obviously new because he sent a ball to Michelle in May. What makes this even cuter is that he sent it for Hannah's birthday which he THOUGHT was on August 14th - but its really on September 14th!

Am looking forward to a week of catch up. Honestly, I came home from Virginia, and instead of delving back into my mounds of work, decided to go to lunch and the movie with a friend! Oh well - paying for that slacking day starting tomorrow.

Happy Friday Girls!

Hi Hannah and Michelle!

Yesterday we drove from Richmond Virginia to Newport News Virginia. It is about a 60 mile drive and should have only taken us 1 hour but it took much longer because it was raining. In fact, it was raining soooooooo hard that at times I could not see the car in front of us. We also saw alot of lightning!!! It was actually very beautiful. The thunder, however, was very, very loud!

I got to see Uncle "Rainy" and cousin Avery. We went out to dinner with Avery and her parents and her little sister Braylee. We had a great time.

We are staying at a Holiday Inn hotel - we have a 1 bedroom suite which means there is a bedroom and a separate living room with a dining room and kitchen area. There are 2 t.v.s here! There is also a swimming pool but I forgot to bring my swimming suit!

I will be here only 2 more days then I will leave on Monday. I will be home on Monday night. I can't wait to see you!

I love you very much! Have a fun weekend! I know youa re being kind to everyone - especially each other.

Love,
Mom

Thursday Note to Hannah and Michelle

Hi Girls

We are in Dallas, Texas right now. We have one more plane to catch before we arrive in Richmond, Virginia.
We flew all night long and we are very tired. We got to eat ice cream with hot fudge sauce when we were on the plane. It was yummy!
We will get to Richmond at about 1:00 this afternoon. It is supposed to be hot there - like 100 degrees.
I hope you are having a good time at school and are being obedient. I hope you remember to make your beds every morning. Most of all I hope you remember to be kind. It is important to always be kind. I love you.
Mom

To Hannah and Michelle

Hello my girls,

Like I told you - I will be gone for 5 days and nights. I will be home on Monday night. I am going to Virginia with Aunty Brandi.

I put your clothes that you should wear for school on my bed. Go in my room on Thursday, Friday and Monday and get your school clothes. I put a sign on each stack so you will know which clothes is for each day. On Saturday and Sunday you can just get clothes out of your drawers.

You can ask Dad if he will take you to the pool. If you have been obedient and have no bad attitudes he might say yes. I know you both love to swim.

I love you both very much. I know you will be helpful and obedient while I am gone. Remember to always be kind.

Love,
MomThis is an old picture. I look much prettier now! Haha!

Flying out tomorrow night - Orlando bound for FAS Training Conference. So much to do:
  1. Get Salary Survey out (its sooo past due) and I need Gene's brain to help me with it
  2. Prep for tradeshow (which starts the Monday after I get back)
  3. Pack (small detail)
  4. Do some family reunion related correspondence
  5. Prep for Sharing Time in Primary

  7. Pay some bills
So much to do yet I procrastinate.

Footloose

I didn't get to go to Gabe's performance tonight in Provo BUT...that dear, sweet, talented, smart, witty, gorgeous, humble, exciting, stupendous, excellent, thoughtful, kind, loving, cheerful, spiritual, benevolent, honest, inspiring and beautiful VANESSA went!

She said "He did sooo good!" Yup four o's and an exclamation mark!

It's really the 2nd time she's sat in on a performance when I couldn't - she went to Dance Concert last year when I was somewhere - maybe Russia.

Anyway - she's my new BFF.

Update on My Boys

Boy #1 - The Missionary
Got a quick email from him yesterday. he didn't have too much time to write - why? Because he had spent all day in the ER. He cracked his head open! But he says he's okay AND THAT'S ALL HE SAID! Grrrrrrrrrrrr.

Boy #2 - The Performer
Called last night from Provo. He is having a great time at his singing workshop. He said he is the first person to win the lead for Footloose during their first year of attending the workshop. He is thrilled. He said everyone there is soooooooooo talented so it ups his game. There is also a girl there from one of the Kailua wards!

So grateful my boys are doing well. I pray for them everyday.

GREAT Day

Definitely was 'cause -

I got a letter from Jacob

AND

A phone call from Susan

I miss those two kids. Both are doing well and enjoying where they are - Boise Idaho and Bali Indonesia.

Now could there be any two places that are more opposite? Or two people that are for that matter...

What She Said

Overheard this comment from Hannah:

"Yup when I grow up I want to be a custodian."

Sabbath Thoughts

Am happy for this day even though I...

1) Have to give a talk in Sacrament Meeting
2) Have the Sharing Time Activity in Primary today
3) Am responsible for cooking the ham dinner for tonight's fireside
4) Have to plan the kids activity for the fireside
5) Miss my 3 oldest who are all in various parts of the world.

Luckily I have help - both here on earth and from above.

Good Sabbath!

Is it or Isn't It?

They say its the new Harry Potter.

Started reading it this past weekend.
The jury is still out - but so far...

I'm a HUGE fan!

Talk

I have to give a talk on Sunday at church. A bit nervous.

Topic - How the gospel has blessed my life - or why I am glad the missionaries taught me the gospel - or something along those lines...

Lots to say - and I can keep it within my time limit - but still nervous (although not scared).

I have faith the Lord will help me say what is in my heart and what can uplift others.

The gospel means everything to me.

Susan News

Susan called (via skype) yesterday. She is back in Kuta and doing well. She is enjoying Bali - they were waiting for a shuttle to go out the Gillys (which I think are islands).

She said they will stay in Kuta awhile then go back out to Ubud. Her traveling partner Melissa is a good planner and has the next 3 weeks all planned out as to what they will see and do.

Only 3 more weeks! Miss her lots!

Departures and Arrivals

Gabe leaves today for EFY in Laie. He then comes home on Saturday morning and then leaves Saturday night for 3 weeks in Utah - he'll be attending a 1 week singing workshop and a 2 week theater workshop at BYU Provo.

It will certainly be quiet around here without him!

He got a call yesterday - he made the ensemble for the musical "Once Upon This Island" directed by Ron Bright at Windward Community College. They told him he would have gotten one of the young male leads but since rehearsal begin today, the fact that he'll be gone for the entire month of July precludes him from those roles.

But ensemble is GREAT - lots of dancing and not as much pressure (especially with school starting August 4).

This production marks an "Arrival" of sorts for him...although he's been in lots of plays before this marks the first one that is truly community theater (as opposed to school production) and the first one that is primarily adult actors.

He is thrilled to work with Ron Bright - directing KING here in Hawaii for more than 40 years.

It opens September 10th at Paliku Theater.

He's certainly not shy.

He gets it from his father.

Ride 'Em

Michelle takes Therapeutic Horsemanship - every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at the Waimanalo Polo Field.

She has learned to pat the horse when you walk behind him.

Her horse is named Palaka and her instructor is Saundra.

She likes to ride fast!

She loves it...can you tell?

Celebrity

So I went to Polynesian Cultural Center yesterday with my nephew and we took the Temple Visitor's Center Tour and I had a close encounter with a celebrity - I had to get my picture taken with him!

It's MARK EUBANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!

For those of you who are saying "Who dat?" you must not be from Utah or spent much time in Utah. He was the weather guy on KSL t.v. station for decades. He's like rock-star-famous in Utah!

He is here serving a mission at the Visitor's Center!

Relatives

Several relatives are flying in for Rookie's funeral next Friday. He was greatly loved - but I think his wife is even more loved. We all want to be here for her.

I love my ohana!

Susan Update

Got a call from my Susan today! So good to hear her voice! She is still in Uluwatu (spelling) at a place that's only $7 per night. She is enjoying herself and meeting new people.

She'll be home on 27 July - and we are soooooooooooooooooo looking forward to seeing her!

No matter how old she is - she's my little baby!

Movie Night

Michelle and Gabe and some of the other teens in our ward went to see Toy Story 3 last night. here's their picture. Michelle is so short!

Email from Jacob

Got the following email from Jacob yesterday (I live for his emails and letters!) - my commentary is in yellow:

Heya Jenny, whats up?(He says "Jenny" cause people I have known 30 years still mispronounce my name as Jenny instead of Ginny which rhymes with skinny)

Uncle Rookie will be remembered as a Hero, a true man of vision. Let us celebrate his legacy!

LOL @ Brandi. He's referring to my note to him that Brandi got in an accident with her new car)altho it is sad that her cars are now broken (and that insurance will probably be rediculous now) tell her she has MY permission to use my car which is really your car which susan was borrowing but cant as she is now in Bali. ;)

So i am in the Boise South Stake of the Boise South Zone. We have a car half of the weak as we are in a car share. The Summer is nothing short of Horrible. It is way to Hot here. Almost as bad as the winter is cold.

In Eagle we only covered 4 wards, but i am back up to 5 wards here, which is about average. the most i have covered at a time is 9 wards.

I remember hearing Stories of Rene. Tell him i say 'Hi' (and where in Ohio is he from? my comp now is from Ohio)

love ya Ginny, write ya gain soon! He's trying to prove to me that he knows how to pronounce my name. you are an awesome mother. He's emphasizing this because in my note to him I emphasized that I know her writes his girlfriend more than he writes me -- he's trying to score points with me)

love, jake

I love my associations with Church friends.
I love the quiet activities we do on Sunday.
I love having the family eat all 3 meals together.
I love everyone being home.

I love the Sabbath.
Sabbath day observance brings peace.

This I know.

The BEST Card Ever

I got a birthday card from Gabe today.

On the outside it looks like just a sweet normal card.

Even on the inside - it looks like a sweet normal card.

And then you press the button...
It plays "What a Wonderful World" as it shows some of Disney's best mothers.

Sorry for the blurriness - but my camera (and my eyesight ain't so good)

But as for the card -
I LOVE IT!

Pictures of Susan

Finally uploaded these pictures from my camera. These were taken on the morning Susan left for Bali. June 20, 2010 - Father's Day. SO hard to say goodbye to my #1 girl - she is the bestest of the best. I am so proud of her for being such a loving and kind daughter and big sister.

Bali Hai Will Call You...

And she did! Susan has called twice from Bali. When she first arrived she was supposed to check into Hotel Lusa but it was full so they checked into another hotel (on the beach in Kuta) and ended up paying $11 per night (which she and Melissa split). She said it was nice but that the water smelled like sulfur.

Today she called and they have left the city and are in someplace called Ubud? Theya re staying at a $3 per person per night hotel that is just okay. They are looking for another place.

She said she is well and enjoying herself. She said it is very interesting - lots of dogs around - the people believe the dogs are reincarnated criminals. She also said lots of cows around - the cows are revered. She said the cows are really "beautiful".

I am glad she is enjoying herself in a new part of the world. What an adventure!

We plan on speaking every 3 days. Can't wait til the next call!

Double Dose

Went to the neurologist for Hannah yesterday. He had upped her meds a month ago (doubled them) because he wanted the Tegretol at a specific level and hopefully control her seizures.

At this appointment we learned that the blood tests showed the tegretol level in her blood didn't even go up 2/10ths - so very minimal.

Why - when the dose was DOUBLED???

Answer - her metabolism is too high - DUH! The doctor said this as Hannah was jumping around the office...and had already had 41 seizures that day.

SO - we are doubling everything AGAIN and seeing if that will work.

This metabolism thing is, of course, why she eats and yet stays slender, slender, slender.

I want to switch my metabolism for hers - just for one month. Please.

Sageet

We got an invitation to a Sageet (Engagement Party) for Steve and Azeema. It was on Saturday night. We didn't know what to expect - but the invitation said wear green and bring a south asian dish for potluck.

These are the people that gave the party.
His name is Joe, I can't remember her name but the baby is Anwar.

All the furniture had been removed from the living room and there were mats and pillows around the edges of the room.

There was a beautiful decorated 4 poster bed at the "head" of the room.

Steve and Azeema sat on the bed while each guest hand fed them bits of a special doughnut
This was some kind of Asian cermony. It was very interesting.

Then the women all danced a cultural dance and invited everyone to join them.

Everything was very interesting and the food was plentiful, different and yummy. Everyone was so kind and warm and one more thing I noticed - every single woman that attended (most were Indian/Pakistani I think) - everyone of them was absolutely beautiful! Like movie star beautiful.

It was strange for me to be at a party and realize, for the FIRST TIME EVER that
I wasn't the ONLY beautiful woman in the room.

Miracles

So last Friday Susan told me that she lost her debit card...GREAT. She was leaving for Bali 2 days later and losing it meant she'd have to take just cash...which is not that great an idea.

We decided we'd let her take one of gene's debit cards.

On Saturday afternoon I got a message on my cell phone from a guy named Gary who found her debit card AND her driver's license (she neglected to tell me she had lost that too).

How did he get my number since its not on either card????

MIRACLE.

We picked it up that night and she left Sunday.

Someone's watching over us for sure.

Tuesday, June 15, 2010

Good News!

Its not a brain tumor!

So we keep plugging away hoping to get the right mix and dosage of meds to control the seizures.

Thanks for the prayers.

Catch Up

Camping went well for Michelle - thanks to her awesome sister Susan. Both enjoyed the camp, beach and activities.

Hannah had her MRI on Saturday - but no results yet :-(

Gabe got back from Utah and jumped right into 3 weeks of drivers ed classes. He met a girl at EFY that he is particularly fond of - but she lives in New Mexico.

The mother of some good friends died so we'll be going to a funeral on Wednesday - gene is speaking at it.

Susan is starting to pack for her trip.

And I have a terrible cold. Not feeling good at all.

But could be worse.

Thursday, June 10, 2010

Anticipation

Michelle leaves for camping in a couple of hours. How will she do? Who's to say? Packed food she will eat since I know she'll turn her nose up at what they will be serving - so filled the cooler with bologna sandwiches, pizza, chips, cookies, pears, orange crush and water. She'll at least survive.

Gabe home in 2 days - YAY!

Hannah's MRI in 2 days...praying.

The Week That Was

...Gabe went to EFY in Utah and is now spending the weekend having fun with Jimmy Fitzgerald and family (Jimmy used to be in our Ward and was Gabe's Young Men's leader - he moved to Utah in Dec.)

...Got Lakona (Gabe's friend) off to Utah on Thursday night! Whew! He'd never flown before and was a bit nervous. Called me from each layover (3) so I could walk him through the process and guide him (over the phone) to the next gate.

...Hannah had 2 really bad seizures -she had probably more than 50 this week - but 2 were significant because she got hurt! A huge goose egg with one and a very bad cut and fat lip with the other. We took her in after the lip one and her neurologist finally got serious. He added another drug to her medication cocktail since he said he had "a bad feeling that Hannah is one of those people that will not benefit from medication". If she continues to get hurt then we'll start looking at helmets. Her sedated MRI to rule out a brain tumor is scheduled for next Saturday.

...Susan moved back home - sort of. Some of her stuff is here. She was here one night. Her bed and last bit of stuff and her body (maybe) should be here tonight.

...Michelle learned to make pancakes! Her first real cooking feat.

...Got a letter from Jacob's Mission President telling us Jacob got made an Area Leader - not sure what it is but it sounds good!

...Had a GREAT Family Reunion meeting the other night! Things are certainly firming up for this event. I love my Mossman Ohana.

...Spent a good 10 hours this week doing some Mossman family history research and discovered not only the location of Captain Mossman's store in Honolulu, but also refernce to and map of location where he owned a boarding house!

...Heard from my Mossman cousins in England =) and now have such a yearning to go and visit them and go to the family plot in Berwick again. Now if I only had the money.

...Got a cool email from my sister Leilani - reminding me to keep track of our brother Bobby.

...Had a great online chat with my cousin Lisa! Gotta love FB for that one. I'm planning a baby shower for my cousin Manu's wife on July 10. As always, Lisa is the connector in her family.

...Finished completing the tabulation of the Annual Salary Survey for my work. I had to do the formulas on the spreadsheet and everything. Those who know me realize this is quite an accomplishment cause I don't do numbers - only colors.

...Had a meeting with FOG about our upcoming Church History trip in late September. Awesome friends. We have the best potlucks for these meetings. Our travel plans are firming up and we will once again be able to stay at Marydale Inn in Jameson, Missouri. A wonderfully relaxing place.

...Made Sticky Toffee Pudding last night for Gene's dessert! Its the recipe from Augill Castle in Kirkby Stephen (Lake District England) where we stayed in 2006. Yummy and still some left!

...Broke the in-the-door-ice maker on the fridge. Luckily Gene is handy and will fix it (its the motor) today.

And that was it for the last week. Certainly B & B - Busy & Blessed!

Reunion Meeting

Got one tonight at 6 at Bina's house. Its always a game to see who is going to show up. Hopefully it will be productive and we will get all plans finalized.

I've set a goal to get all registration info out by June 15th but I can't do that unless everything is finalized.

Here's hoping!

Long Weekend

Gabe and company finally got to Utah after having their departing flight cancelled last Thursday. He began his Especially for Youth week at BYU Provo and I am sure he is having a blast.

He'll end up staying for 2 weeks cause I ended up getting Lakona a ticket and registering him for the EFY session next week - so had to register Gabe for next week's session as well. They'll have a great time. No regrets about the expense. All worth it.

We spent most of this holiday cleaning screens, louvers, windows, floors, walls, closets, rooms and rearranging furniture in anticipation of Susan returning home today for about 3 weeks. She leaves for Bali on June 20.

Gene went to the dump TWICE cause we had so much JUNK!!!! Feels good to get rid of stuff...

Not much else going on - but decided we had to have some kind of barbecue for Memorial Day - so just started some chicken - probably eating late cause I got such a late start! Oh well - food is food!

More reunion

Just spent 3 hours viewing 300+ webpage references to either Mossman Family Hisotry, Captain Thomas James Mossman or Mossman Ohana. Lost to weed through - but all in all a reqrding experience.

I found a blog of a woman I know we are related to who is in Northumberland England. I sent her an email.

Found a reference for a Thomas Mossman who I think is my mother's first cousin - sent him an email.

And found the website for Shirley Mossman Nisbitt whom I know we are related to - sent her an email.

Hopefully will make contact and spread the news about our upcoming reunion and get to know these folks too.

But hey - aren't we all related anyway?

Anyway - all this research has made me homesick (yup, homesick) for England. So don't be surprised if I take a short journey there sometime before November...wanna go back to Berwick where the Captain came from, wanna go to Edinburgh again and this time visit John Knox house (which is really the Mossman house), wanna see Keith & Viv at Hill House and visit Ian & Marian in Plymp Wales...oh and as long as I'm there...gotta see Les Mis ;)

Reunion

I am on the Planning Committee for our upcoming Captain Thomas Mossman Reunion scheduled for November 10-12, 2010.

It has been an interesting experience...I'm a "just start doing it" kind of person and not into yapping about it - just DO it.

Sooooooooooo it was great meeting with my subcommittee comprised of my 2 cousins Godfrey and John this past weekend and planning out two days of reunion activities. We got so much accomplished in a one hour meeting! Both are solid and dependable and have great families who I know will give them support to carry out the reunion functions. I love these guys!

For a peek at what we will be doing check out our reunion blog at http://www.mossmanohana2010.blogspot.com

Almost Off

Gabe leaves tonight for Portland and then Provo. He will be visiting the Bradys in Portland. They used to be our neighbors here in Haiku Village about 8 years ago and we visited them a couple of times after they moved to Virginia. Their kids were Gabe's best friends - I am sure they will have a GREAT reunion. Wish I could be there too.

Lori Brady (the mom, and the BEST neighbor I have ever had) invited my sister Alo over for dinner tomorrow night to see Gabe. I am so happy that connection between the Bradys and Alo will finally be made. They have alot in common - big dogs, bike riding, hiking...plus pretty me.

Gabe will then fly to Utah on Monday to attend Especially for Youth Program at BYU Provo. He enjoys EFY so much and it it totally worth the money for him to go!

If I had enough $ I would send Lakona too. (He's Gabe's friend who sleeps at our house about 4 nights a week - but alas $ doesn't grow on trees).

Gabe has spent much of the last two days cleaning his room and getting his things organized for the trip. I know he'll have a good time, make and renew lasting friendships and strengthen his love for family and God through his experiences over the next 10 or so days.

Ah to be 16 again!

Wedding

So my brother Steve is getting married to Azeema I think the weekend of August 7. I am looking forward to helping them in any way I can.

Should be an exciting time.

Returning - Semi

I have been without a desktop computer for 2 weeks. It is difficult running 2 businesses from a small netbook and near impossible to blog - but here goes...

News of Note -

Gene got back from Nicaragua - he found it interesting and depressing - in his words "its not the destination, its the journey". Although the hotel he stayed in was 5 star the entire area of the capitol is like a slum. he said people begging everywhere, buildings slapped together, alot of poverty. he hired a private guide for a day and went hiking, saw an active volcano, took a boat ride on Lake Nicaragua and saw some historical sites. he had an adventure on all of the flights (cancellations, rebookings, etc.) but was in first class or business the entire time - so not too tough. Bottom line - he earned 58,331 miles.

Michelle had her 13th birthday on Saturday. We spent the night before in a cabin at Bellows then on Saturday we rented a pavilion at Bellows. it came with a jump house and 20 rounds of mini golf. It was perfect. We invited about 50 people and they all came!

We started the party at 11:00 - the jump house was a big hit! The spot was also next to the drivng range so most of the teens and men spent the day hitting balls. Kookie and Manu Laumatia and 6 of their 10 kids came, Kookie's friend Stephanie and her 3 kids, Uncle AKini, Aunty Judee, Tehani & Jonah, Candie, Cheyenne & Sorrel, Wena, tricia, Kawena & Kaliko Adams (friends from church) came, Renny & Heather (Michelle's classmates) and their family came, Carly and Lehua, Chad & Jill and their new baby CJ came, Gene's friend from work, Steve and Azeema, brandi and my sister-in-law Debi (Bill's wife) was visiting so she came too.

We had chili, hot dogs, chicken, rice, salad, cornbread and cupcakes.

We were suppsoed to end the party at 2:30 b ut didn't end until almost 5.

A fun day for all -- and now we have a 13 year old!
